Hampton is a small, lightly settled town in Windham County, deep in the rolling farm-and-forest country of northeastern Connecticut that residents call the Quiet Corner. The land was the territory of the Nipmuck people before English families, many of them from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, settled the area around 1712 as part of Windham. For decades it was a outlying parish, and it took the better part of a century — and, by local account, a town vote that carried by a single ballot — before Hampton was finally incorporated as its own town in 1786, assembled from pieces of Windham, Pomfret, Brooklyn, Canterbury, and Mansfield.
The heart of the town has changed remarkably little. The Hampton Hill Historic District runs for about a mile along Main Street, which is Route 97, lining the ridge with white churches, the town hall, the post office, an old store, and a row of early houses — a New England village streetscape so intact that it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. To walk it is to see a colonial farming town much as it was.
Hampton was never purely agricultural, though. Along the Little River, mills turned as early as 1718, grinding cider apples and sawing shingles and later spinning cotton, and over the years the town’s small shops and factories turned out an unlikely variety of goods — pins, buttons, rakes, spectacles, hats, even silver spoons. These were modest, water-powered enterprises, the kind that gave a small inland town a bit of cash income alongside its farms, and they faded as industry concentrated in the larger mill cities nearby.
Even a town this quiet sees traffic worth watching. U.S. Route 6 crosses Hampton east and west as a main route across the northeast, and Route 97 runs north and south through the historic village. Both carry steady through traffic, and the open stretches see regular enforcement, with citations not uncommon.
