Groton occupies the east bank of the Thames River where it meets Long Island Sound, sitting directly across the water from New London. It was established as a town in 1705 when it separated from New London, and it carries a heavy share of the region’s Revolutionary history: on September 6, 1781, British forces led by the turncoat Benedict Arnold stormed Fort Griswold in the Battle of Groton Heights, where Colonel William Ledyard and his defenders were overwhelmed in one of the war’s bloodier local engagements. The fort and its monument still crown the heights above the river.
But Groton’s modern identity is bound up with the submarine. The town is known as the “Submarine Capital of the World,” and the title is well earned: General Dynamics Electric Boat has designed and built submarines along the Thames since the early twentieth century, its shipways a defining feature of the riverfront, while across town the Naval Submarine Base New London — the Navy’s primary East Coast submarine base, dating to an 1872 navy yard — serves as the “Home of the Submarine Force.” The two together make Groton a Navy town through and through, employing thousands and shaping its economy and rhythm.
That heritage is on display at the Submarine Force Museum, where the USS Nautilus — the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine — is preserved as a National Historic Landmark and open to visitors. Beyond the bases and shipyards, Groton also takes in shoreline neighborhoods, the densely built City of Groton on the river, and a share of the village of Mystic to the east, giving the town a mix of military, maritime, and seaside character.
All of that activity converges on a busy road network. Interstate 95 crosses the Thames into Groton on the soaring Gold Star Memorial Bridge, one of the most heavily traveled crossings in the state, while Route 12 runs north past Electric Boat and the submarine base and Routes 1 and 184 carry local traffic. These corridors see constant traffic and steady enforcement, and citations are common along them.
