Griswold sits at the northeastern edge of New London County, in the river-and-mill country of eastern Connecticut where the Pachaug and Quinebaug rivers wind through the town. Those rivers shaped its whole history. They were long a fishing ground for the Mohegan people, and when English settlers arrived they put the falling water to work, raising ironworks, sawmills, and gristmills along the banks. Originally part of Preston, the town separated and incorporated in 1815, taking the name of Governor Roger Griswold.
At the heart of Griswold is Jewett City, the compact mill borough that grew up around the enterprises of Eliezer Jewett, who opened a sawmill on the Pachaug River in 1771. The village that gathered around his mills eventually took his name, and it became a true factory town in the early nineteenth century — most notably when the Jewett City Cotton Manufacturing Company, at the mouth of the Pachaug, was bought in 1823 by John and Samuel Slater, the family that had introduced the mechanized textile mill to America. Jewett City incorporated as a borough within Griswold in 1895, and its dense streets of mill housing and brick factories still mark it as one of the classic small mill villages of the region.
Around the borough, Griswold remains a mix of that industrial past and the rural countryside of the eastern hills — old farms, woodland, and the river valleys that drew the first settlers. It is a working town of modest size, proud of its mill heritage and its place among the river communities of the Quinebaug and Shetucket valleys.
The town’s traffic concentrates where its roads meet in Jewett City. Route 12, which runs through the borough as Main Street and Slater Avenue, crosses Route 138, the Voluntown Road, in the heart of the old village, while Route 201 carries additional traffic through town. The borough streets grow congested and see steady enforcement, and citations are common where the routes converge.
