Granby lies at the northern end of the Farmington Valley in Hartford County, pressed against the Massachusetts line where the valley floor meets the wooded traprock hills. The town traces its origins to a British settlement called Salmon Brook, begun around 1680 as an outlying section of Simsbury. As the population grew, Salmon Brook became its own ecclesiastical society in 1736 and finally a separate town, Granby, in 1786. The wide, tree-lined main street through the center, lined with eighteenth- and nineteenth-century houses set well back from the road, still gives Granby the look of an old valley farming town.

Farming was indeed the heart of it. From early subsistence agriculture the town moved into orchards, tobacco, and dairy, the broad-leaf tobacco of the valley curing in long sheds while apples ripened on the hillsides — a way of life that held on until agriculture began to wane in the 1950s. Where streams tumbled over Granby’s characteristic rock ledges, small industries took hold as well, turning out shoes, horse-drawn carriages, wool cards, and forest products. The Salmon Brook Historical Society now keeps that heritage, its grounds anchored by an early-twentieth-century tobacco barn.

Granby holds a small but real place in the state’s transportation history. On the Fourth of July in 1825, construction of the Farmington Canal began right here at the Connecticut–Massachusetts border, when Governor Wolcott turned the first spadeful of earth for the waterway that would briefly link New Haven to Northampton. Today the town is a quiet residential community known for its open space and trails — including the McLean Game Refuge straddling the Granby–Simsbury line — that draw walkers and riders into the valley’s hills and woods.

The town’s traffic moves along a handful of valley routes. Routes 10 and 202 run together north and south through the center along the historic main street, while Route 20 carries east–west traffic and Route 189 heads north toward the state line. These roads carry steady commuter and through traffic and see regular enforcement, with citations common along the busier stretches.
