Goshen is one of the high hill towns of Litchfield County, sitting at an elevation that makes its winters long and its summers cool, a town of open fields, stone walls, and broad views across the northwest hills. It was settled in 1738 and incorporated the following year, drawing many of its first families from Wallingford and Farmington, who cleared the uplands and built the kind of self-sufficient farming community that defined colonial Connecticut. By the early years of the republic Goshen had grown into a prosperous town of gristmills, sawmills, tanneries, and blacksmith shops gathered around its green.

Goshen’s particular claim to fame was cheese. In the early nineteenth century the town became known across the country for its “Pineapple Cheese,” a hard cheese cured in nets and shaped and colored to resemble the tropical fruit it was named for — an unlikely specialty for a cold New England hilltop. The same era produced the Hervey Brooks pottery shop, whose redware has made Goshen a touchstone for collectors and historians of early American crafts. These small, distinctive industries gave the town an identity well beyond its size.

That agricultural heart still beats every Labor Day weekend at the Goshen Fair, the largest agricultural fair in Litchfield County, where the fairgrounds fill with livestock judging, log-chopping and hay-bale contests, and the rituals of a country fair that has run for generations. The rest of the year Goshen remains a quiet, working rural town, its historic district centered on the green where the old turnpikes met.

Those turnpikes are still the town’s main roads. Route 4, the old east–west road between Torrington and Sharon, crosses Route 63, the north–south route between Litchfield and Canaan, right at the village center, and the fairgrounds sit on Route 63 just to the south. These open hill roads carry steady through traffic and see regular enforcement, with citations common on the faster stretches.
