Glastonbury occupies the east bank of the Connecticut River just southeast of Hartford, a large town whose history runs nearly as deep as the colony itself. In 1636 some thirty families settled a riverside tract called Pyaug, bought from the Native chief Sowheag for a few yards of trading cloth, and by 1693 the settlement had separated from Wethersfield to become the town of Glassenbury. The river has shaped it ever since — most charmingly in the Rocky Hill–Glastonbury Ferry, which has crossed the Connecticut here since 1655 and is regarded as the oldest continuously operating ferry in the country, still carrying a handful of cars across the water each season.

The town’s fertile river-valley land made it farm country, and Glastonbury became a major grower of broad-leaf tobacco in the valley tradition. Its hills, though, are best remembered for fruit: J.H. Hale Orchards began here in 1866, and John Howard Hale earned national fame as the “Peach King” for breeding a peach hardy enough to survive New England winters. That agricultural legacy endures in the orchards and berry farms that still climb the eastern slopes, and in the cider-and-apple character of South Glastonbury each fall.

Glastonbury has also produced figures of national note, none more so than Gideon Welles, who grew up here and went on to serve as Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of the Navy through the Civil War. Today the town blends that history with prosperity: it is one of the more affluent suburbs in the Hartford region, with a busy town center, riverfront parks, and neighborhoods full of families drawn by its schools and its setting.

Most of that population commutes, and the commute defines the town’s traffic. Route 2 is Glastonbury’s main highway, a busy limited-access road with several local exits that carries commuters into Hartford each morning and back each evening, while Routes 3 and 17 handle additional through traffic. These corridors fill at rush hour and see steady enforcement, with citations common along them.
