Get to Know the Area

Enfield, Connecticut

Enfield occupies the northeast corner of Hartford County, a large town pressed right up against the Massachusetts line on the east bank of the Connecticut River. Its history reflects that border position: Massachusetts named and incorporated Enfield in 1683, and it was only in 1749, after a long colonial boundary dispute, that the town was reassigned to Connecticut. Over the centuries the modern town came together from several distinct districts, each with its own industry and identity, and that patchwork still shapes how Enfield feels today.

Two of those districts made the town’s name. Hazardville, along the Scantic River, took its name from Colonel Augustus Hazard, whose powder company turned the Powder Hollow gorge into one of the country’s major gunpowder works from the 1830s into the early twentieth century โ€” a dangerous trade marked by frequent explosions. Thompsonville, named for Orrin Thompson, became a carpet-manufacturing center after Thompson opened his first mill in 1829, and the Thompsonville mills wove carpet for well over a century before the industry moved south.

Enfield also holds a quieter chapter of American history. In 1793 a Shaker community settled here, one of nineteen Shaker villages from Maine to Kentucky, and the Enfield Shakers became known for the garden seeds and goods they sold across the country before the community eventually faded. Today Enfield is a busy, populous town that blends those layers โ€” old mill villages, Shaker farmland, and a modern landscape of shopping centers and subdivisions along the river corridor.

That mix generates heavy, constant traffic. Interstate 91 and U.S. Route 5 run north and south through Enfield, carrying commuters and travelers across the state line, while Route 220 feeds the busy retail corridor around the Enfield Square mall and Route 190 crosses the river to Suffield. These roads see steady enforcement, especially around the shopping districts and the interstate ramps, and citations are common. We follow these corridors and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
