Ellington sits in Tolland County at the eastern edge of the Connecticut River valley, where the flat, fertile tobacco land gives way to the rolling hills of the state’s northeast. Its first European settlers arrived in the early 1700s, working a remote stretch of Windsor known then as the “Great Marsh” for its wetlands, and the community grew slowly until it was set off from East Windsor and incorporated as a town in 1786. Oakridge Dairy, with roots reaching back more than a century, expanded into the largest dairy operation in Connecticut, a reminder that agriculture here is not just heritage but a living industry.
That farming character still defines the town. Ellington has worked to protect open space and preserve its watershed and farmland even as suburban neighborhoods have filled in around a compact, traditional village center. The Crystal Lake section in the east, set around its lake and the surrounding hills, adds a recreational and residential counterpoint to the working farms of the valley floor, giving the town both a pastoral and a settled, small-town feel.
Ellington’s roads carry the traffic of a growing town. Route 83 runs north and south straight through the town center, the main artery linking Ellington toward Vernon and Somers, while Route 140 crosses east and west and Route 286 serves the local network. These roads see steady commuter and farm traffic and regular enforcement, with citations common along the busier stretches.
