Easton is the rare Fairfield County town that has stayed rural. Set in the hills inland from the busy coast, it is a heavily wooded community of winding roads, stone walls, working farms, and large estates, with no commercial strip and no real downtown to speak of. The land was first settled in 1757 and was long part of neighboring Weston, separating to become its own town only in 1845. The hilly terrain along the Aspetuck River always made development difficult, and Easton chose to keep it that way.
A large reason for that is water. Much of Easton’s land lies within the watershed of public-water reservoirs, including the broad Hemlock Reservoir, whose protected shores and surrounding open land have effectively frozen large parts of town against building. The result is a community that has held onto its fields and forests even as the towns around it filled in — a green island in one of the most densely settled corners of the state.
Easton’s quiet has drawn notable residents and enterprises over the years. Helen Keller made her home here at Arcan Ridge from 1936 until her death in 1968, and the house, later named a National Landmark, ties the town to one of the most admired figures of the twentieth century. On a more everyday level, Silverman’s Farm, founded by Ben Silverman in 1920, has become a regional institution, drawing families each fall for its orchards, animals, and pick-your-own harvests. Together they capture Easton’s mix of pastoral calm and quiet renown.
Even a town this rural sees its share of traffic. Route 59, known as Sport Hill Road, and Route 58, the Black Rock Turnpike, run north and south through Easton, carrying commuters between the shoreline cities and the towns to the north, with Route 136 crossing the area as well. These roads see steady enforcement, and a citation on any of them can affect a driver’s license, insurance, and record.
