East Lyme stretches along the Long Island Sound shoreline in southeastern Connecticut’s New London County, a town pieced together in 1839 from parts of Lyme and Waterford though settled nearly two centuries earlier, around 1660. It has always been two communities in one. Flanders, in the north, grew up as the inland crossroads village, while Niantic, on the coast, became the town’s maritime heart — a working harbor village whose Algonquian name means “point of land on the water.”

Niantic’s story is the story of the sea. The village developed around oystering and fishing, its boats working the Sound and the rivers, and when the New Haven & New London Railroad reached it in 1852, the rails opened the village to wider trade and, eventually, to the summer visitors who would reshape it. To this day Niantic keeps the feel of a shoreline village, with a walkable downtown, a boardwalk along the water, and a fishing-town past still visible beneath its role as a seasonal destination.

The town’s best-known natural landmark is Rocky Neck State Park, more than seven hundred acres of beach, marsh, and woodland fronting the Sound. Conservationists assembled the land in the early 1930s, and during the Depression federal relief workers built its grand timber-and-granite pavilion, still a centerpiece of the park. Together with the beaches of Niantic, Rocky Neck makes East Lyme a summer draw, its population swelling with vacationers when the weather turns warm.

That seasonal rhythm shows on the roads. Interstate 95 runs west to east across the northern part of town, close alongside the Post Road, U.S. Route 1, while Route 156 carries shore traffic through Niantic and the beach neighborhoods. In summer especially these roads fill with visitors unfamiliar with the area, and enforcement is steady, with citations common along the busier stretches.
