East Hartford lies directly across the Connecticut River from the state capital, occupying the east bank in Hartford County. For its first two centuries it was a farming community in the rich river-valley soil, part of the broad tobacco-growing belt that lined the Connecticut. But the twentieth century turned East Hartford into something else entirely — a company town built around one of the most important manufacturers in American aviation.

That manufacturer is Pratt & Whitney. Founded in 1925 by Frederick Rentschler, the firm moved to a sprawling new plant in East Hartford in 1929, complete with its own airfield, Rentschler Field, for testing the aircraft engines that made its name. The city grew up around the factory: its population tripled between 1929 and 1950, and after the fall of France in 1940 the plant’s workforce swelled into the tens of thousands as it poured out engines for the war effort. The National Park Service later recognized East Hartford as Connecticut’s World War II Heritage City for that production, and Pratt & Whitney remains headquartered in the town to this day.

The old airfield has found a new life. Where engines were once flight-tested, Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field now stands, home to UConn football and a venue for concerts and large events, keeping the Rentschler name attached to the ground where the company began. Around it, East Hartford is a dense, working community of riverfront neighborhoods, commercial strips, and the industrial corridors that grew with the plant.

Its position opposite Hartford makes East Hartford a crossroads of highways. Interstate 84 crosses the river into the town and runs east toward Manchester, and Route 2 carries traffic southeast out of the capital region, while Main Street and Silver Lane handle the heavy local flow. These corridors are among the busiest in the area, and they see constant enforcement and citations.
