East Hampton is a good-sized town on the east bank of the Connecticut River in Middlesex County, spread across some thirty-six square miles of hills, woods, and water. It was incorporated in 1767 as Chatham — named for William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham, in gratitude for his support of the American colonies — and did not take its present name until 1915. For most of its history its identity has been tied to one small, ringing industry.
East Hampton is “Belltown USA.” Beginning with William Barton’s first factory in 1808 on the hill that came to bear his name, the town became the center of American bell manufacturing, and through the nineteenth century dozens of small shops here turned out sleigh bells, hand bells, and bells of every description. So thoroughly did bells define the town that the nickname stuck, and the craft has never entirely left: Bevin Brothers, an East Hampton firm with roots deep in that era, still casts bells in town, one of the last makers of its kind in the country.
At the center of the town lies Lake Pocotopaug, one of the larger natural lakes in Connecticut, its shoreline lined with homes, beaches, and summer cottages. The lake has long been the recreational heart of the community, and together with the village center — the historic Belltown district of old factories and houses — and the surrounding countryside, it gives East Hampton the feel of a working New England town that has kept its character.
The town’s traffic concentrates on a couple of state routes. Route 66, which follows the line of the old Colchester and Chatham Turnpike, runs east and west through town past the lake and serves as the main commuter route between Middletown and the towns to the east, while Route 16 heads east toward Colchester. Both carry steady traffic and see regular enforcement, with citations common along the busier stretches.
