East Granby is a small town in the Farmington Valley of northern Hartford County, tucked beneath the long basalt spine of the Metacomet ridge — the line of traprock that locals know as Talcott Mountain. For most of its early history the area was part of Simsbury and Granby, a stretch of valley farmland and wooded hillside, and it was only later set off as the independent town of East Granby. That past centers on Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine, one of the most unusual historic sites in the country. Copper was discovered on the west side of the mountain around 1705, and by 1707 town residents had organized the first chartered copper-mining company in America to work the vein. The ore never quite paid, but the deep shafts found a grim second life: in 1773 the state turned the abandoned mine into Connecticut’s first state prison, holding convicts in the caverns underground until 1827. Today the site is a state museum and National Historic Landmark, its prison yard, ruins, and mine tunnels open to visitors who come to see where copper-mining and incarceration met beneath the ridge.
Beyond New-Gate, East Granby remains a small, semi-rural community of farms, valley neighborhoods, and the wooded slopes of the mountain. Its eastern edge runs up against Bradley International Airport, the busiest airport in the region, which gives this otherwise quiet town a surprising neighbor and ties it into the commercial activity around the airport and the Windsor Locks line.
That airport proximity shapes the town’s traffic. Route 20 runs east and west through East Granby toward Windsor Locks and the Bradley terminals, carrying a steady stream of airport and commuter traffic, while Route 187 runs north and south through the town’s quieter stretches. The Route 20 corridor in particular sees consistent enforcement, and citations are common along it.
