Durham sits in the hills of Middlesex County, in the rolling country that separates the Connecticut River valley from the New Haven shoreline. The land was known to the Mattabesset people as Coginchaug — an Algonquin name meaning “long swamp,” for the wetlands along the river that still bears the name. English settlers arrived in 1699 and incorporated the town in 1708, and from the very beginning Durham was a farming community, its fields and pastures spread across the valley floor with a long village green at its heart.
For a small town, Durham took its civic and intellectual life seriously from early on. One of the first lending libraries in the colonies was organized here in 1733, and the Durham Aqueduct Company, founded in 1798, is counted among the oldest public water systems still in operation in the United States. Local lore holds that during the Revolution two oxen were driven all the way from Durham to Valley Forge to help feed Washington’s army — the kind of story a town with deep agricultural roots keeps alive.
That agricultural identity is most visible every autumn at the Durham Fair. Begun in 1916 on the town green, it has grown into the largest volunteer-run agricultural fair in New England, drawing crowds from across the region for livestock, produce, and the rituals of a country fair while remaining true to its farming character. For a community of Durham’s size, the fair is both its signature event and a genuine expression of what the town has always been.
Durham’s quiet character does not spare its roads. Route 17, the old Durham Pike, carries north–south traffic through the town and on toward Middletown, while Route 77, a designated scenic road, climbs up from Guilford and the shoreline before ending at Route 17 just below the town center. These routes see steady commuter and through traffic, and with it regular enforcement and citations.
