Coventry lies in Tolland County, in the rolling farm-and-forest country of northeastern Connecticut. It was named in 1711 for Coventry in the English Midlands and organized as a town the following year, making it one of the older inland communities in the colony. For much of its history it was a farming and milling town, its life centered on small village greens and the meetinghouses that anchored its two parishes, the northern and southern ends of town that long thought of themselves as distinct communities.
Coventry’s proudest claim is Captain Nathan Hale, the Revolutionary patriot and schoolmaster who was born here and is remembered as one of the young nation’s first martyrs. The Nathan Hale Homestead, the family house where he grew up, still stands and operates as a museum, and Hale’s name is attached to schools, a cemetery, and civic landmarks throughout the town. That Revolutionary-era heritage gives Coventry a sense of deep New England roots that residents take seriously.
At the heart of the town is Lake Wangumbaug, better known as Coventry Lake, one of the larger natural lakes in this corner of the state. It was a fishing and hunting ground long before European settlement and later powered the town’s mills; today it is a center of summer life, ringed by cottages and beaches and drawing boaters and swimmers from across the region. The lake, the historic greens, and the surrounding farmland give Coventry its mix of working countryside and weekend recreation.
The town’s main routes carry that traffic. U.S. Route 44 — the old Boston Turnpike — runs east and west across the north end of town through North Coventry, meeting Main Street, which is Route 31, the road that threads north and south through the community. These are the corridors most drivers use, and they see steady enforcement and citations, especially in the busier stretches.
