Cornwall sits in the northwestern corner of Litchfield County, a quiet town of wooded hills folded along the Housatonic River. It was incorporated in 1740 and named, like so many of Connecticut’s early towns, for a place in England — in this case the county of Cornwall. What makes Cornwall unusual is that it has never really been one place. It is a scattering of small villages and hamlets, each with its own character: Cornwall Village a few miles back from the river, Cornwall Bridge and West Cornwall down along the water, and the smaller settlements of Cornwall Hollow and East Cornwall tucked into the surrounding countryside.
The town’s most famous landmark is the West Cornwall Covered Bridge, a wooden lattice-truss span that has carried traffic across the Housatonic since roughly 1864. One of only a handful of covered bridges left in Connecticut, it has made Cornwall the self-described “Home of the Covered Bridge” and one of the most photographed spots in the state, especially when the surrounding hills turn in autumn.
Cornwall’s past is a rural and industrious one. In the nineteenth century the town supported iron furnaces and a charcoal-making trade that fed them, drawing on the timber of the surrounding forests. It was also a place of early institutions, home to the Foreign Mission School founded in 1817 and the Cream Hill Agricultural School established in 1845 — reminders that even a small hill town could leave a mark on the wider history of education and reform. Today Cornwall remains thinly settled and heavily wooded, a town that draws hikers, anglers, and leaf-peepers rather than commuters.
For all its quiet, the roads through Cornwall carry real traffic. U.S. Route 7 follows the Housatonic along the western edge of town, meeting Route 4 at Cornwall Bridge, while Route 128 carries visitors across the covered bridge in West Cornwall. These routes draw seasonal and through traffic, and they see their share of stops and citations.
