Clinton is a shoreline town in Middlesex County, fronting Long Island Sound between Guilford and Old Saybrook. Its written history begins in 1663, when the land was known by its Native name, Hammonasset. The settlement became a town in 1667 under the name Kenilworth, which softened over time into Killingworth. In 1838 the General Assembly split the town, incorporating the southern, coastal portion as Clinton — named for the New York governor DeWitt Clinton — while the inland north kept the old name of Killingworth.

For so small a town, Clinton holds a remarkable distinction: it is, in effect, the birthplace of Yale. When the Collegiate School was chartered in 1701, its first classes were held here, in the Main Street home of its first rector, Abraham Pierson. The school later moved to Saybrook and then to New Haven, where it grew into Yale University, but it began on a Clinton street corner — the very spot where the Stanton House, a fine 18th-century house with its old attached store, stands today. That kind of layered colonial history runs all through the town center.

Clinton’s life has always been tied to the water and the road. It is a harbor town with marinas, beaches, and a working relationship to the Sound, and its prosperity was helped from the start by sitting on the busy shoreline route that is now U.S. Route 1. The historic Main Street, where the town’s first house plots were laid out, still anchors the center, and the shoreline draws summer visitors to its coast.

That combination puts heavy seasonal and commuter traffic on a few roads. Interstate 95 runs across the town near the shore, U.S. Route 1 carries the main commercial traffic through the center as Main Street, and Route 81 heads inland toward Killingworth.
