Chester, Connecticut

Chester is a small town in the lower Connecticut River valley, in Middlesex County, on land long inhabited before English settlers arrived. A Native village called Pattaquonk stood here, and a Wangunk reservation was set aside in the area in 1662. English settlement began in 1692, and the town was eventually carved from the northern quarter of old Saybrook, incorporating as Chester in 1836. The river has shaped the town from the beginning — as a highway, a livelihood, and a boundary.

The town’s most storied landmark crosses that river. The Chester–Hadlyme Ferry, first licensed to Jonathan Warner in 1769 as Warner’s Ferry, is the second-oldest continuously operating ferry service in Connecticut. It began as a raft poled across the water and became a town facility in 1877; today it runs as part of the scenic stretch of Route 148, carrying cars and visitors across the Connecticut toward Gillette Castle State Park on the far bank. Riding it is one of the classic experiences of the river valley.

Chester’s other distinction is its downtown. Main Street curves through the village in a cluster of 19th-century storefronts that have been given over to artists, craftspeople, restaurants, and independent shops, making the small center one of the most charming and creative in the region. It is the kind of place people drive to on purpose, and the town’s arts-and-river character has made it a beloved corner of the shoreline interior.

That mix of through-traffic, river crossings, and visitors moves on a few roads. Route 9 runs north-south through the valley as the main expressway, Route 148 carries the scenic traffic toward the ferry, and Route 154 ties into the local network.
