Cheshire is a town in New Haven County that happens to sit at the demographic middle of the state — the official center of population of Connecticut falls within its borders. It was first settled in 1694 as part of Wallingford, and after years of effort to govern itself, New Cheshire Parish finally won its independence and was incorporated as the town of Cheshire in 1780, taking its name from the English county. For most of its history it was a farming and academy town, and one piece of that agricultural past still shapes its identity today.

Cheshire is known as the “Bedding Plant Capital of Connecticut.” Its 19th-century greenhouse and nursery industry made the town a center for growing bedding plants, and enough greenhouses remain in operation that the nickname has stuck. That horticultural heritage gives Cheshire a distinctive green, cultivated character, visible in the surviving nurseries scattered around town.

History runs close to the surface here. The Farmington Canal, the 19th-century waterway that once linked New Haven to Massachusetts, ran through Cheshire, and its towpath survives as the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail — with Lock 12 Historical Park preserving an original canal lock. The town also keeps one of the oldest schools in the state in Cheshire Academy, founded in 1794 as the Episcopal Academy of Connecticut, whose campus anchors the historic center. Around these landmarks, Cheshire has grown into a sought-after suburban town while holding onto its old village core.

That growth puts heavy traffic on a few key roads. Route 10 is by far the busiest road in Cheshire, carrying north-south commuter and school traffic through the center, while Routes 70 and 68 cross it and Interstate 691 skirts the northern edge of town.
