Canterbury is a rural town in Windham County, in the northeastern Quiet Corner of Connecticut, straddling the Quinebaug River within the rolling landscape known as the Last Green Valley. It began as part of neighboring Plainfield and was set off as its own town, named Canterbury, in 1703 — the thirty-eighth town in the state. Like much of this corner, its early life was built on small mills along the rivers and on farms spread across the hills, and it has held onto that quiet, agricultural character to this day.

Canterbury’s place in American history is far larger than its size. In 1831 a young Quaker teacher named Prudence Crandall opened a private school for girls in town. When she admitted a Black student and then chose to educate young African American women exclusively, she set off informal protests, legal prosecution, and finally a mob attack that forced the school to close in 1834. Her stand made Canterbury a landmark in the history of civil rights and education, and Crandall was later named Connecticut’s official State Heroine.

The house where she taught, an elegant 1805 building noted for the distinctive “Canterbury type” roof and its Palladian window, still stands on the village green and serves as the Prudence Crandall Museum, designated a National Historic Landmark. It anchors a classic New England town center at the meeting of two old roads, and it draws visitors who come specifically to walk the ground where Crandall made her stand. Around it, Canterbury remains a green, historic town of farmland and river valley.
