Brookfield lies in the Housatonic Valley of Fairfield County, near the New York line, on land once held by the Wyantenuck and Paugusset peoples. English colonists settled here in 1710, and the town was incorporated in 1788 from pieces of three neighbors — New Milford, Danbury, and Newtown. It was first called Newbury, but the name was changed to Brookfield to honor the Reverend Thomas Brooks, the parish’s long-serving minister. The Still River, which runs unusually from south to north, gave the early town both its shape and its industry.

That industry concentrated in the Iron Works District along the river, where iron furnaces, grist and cotton mills, comb shops, and lime kilns powered the town’s early growth. The Still River valley was the working heart of old Brookfield, and the district’s name still marks where that history happened. For much of its life Brookfield was a modest mill-and-farm town tucked between larger neighbors.

The single event that most reshaped the town came in 1928, when the damming of the Housatonic created Candlewood Lake — the largest man-made lake in Connecticut. The lake redrew the map: by 1961, lakeside areas including Candlewood Shores and Hickory Hills had become part of Brookfield, giving the town a long recreational shoreline. Today Brookfield combines that lake country with a busy commercial life around the Four Corners district and a quieter, historic Brookfield Center, while Route 133 carries traffic east over the Housatonic toward Bridgewater.

All of that puts steady traffic on a handful of major roads. Interstate 84 and U.S. Route 7 are the main highways through town, Route 25 runs alongside the commercial corridor, and Route 133 crosses the river to the east.
