Bridgewater is one of the smallest and quietest towns in lower Litchfield County, set on rolling land where the Shepaug River meets the Housatonic at the town’s southern tip. It began as part of New Milford — the area was known as Shepaug Neck when Samuel Clark had his share surveyed in 1722 — and it did not become a town of its own until 1856. Among its early settlers was Joseph Treat, a grandson of the colonial governor Robert Treat, and the first school district was laid out in 1758. From the start it was farm country, and farm country it largely stayed.
For most of its history Bridgewater grew tobacco, kept dairy herds, and raised animals, with only a little industry to break the agricultural pattern — a hat-making factory and, more unusually, a mail-order toiletries business run in the 1800s by the entrepreneur Charles B. Thompson. The town never industrialized the way its valley neighbors did, and that is much of its charm. Its conserved open spaces and the broad waters of Lake Lillinonah, formed where the Housatonic was dammed, give Bridgewater a landscape of fields, woods, and shoreline that has changed little in generations.
The town’s small-town character is genuine, not nostalgic. Bridgewater was one of the last dry towns in Connecticut, not voting to allow the sale of alcohol until a referendum in 2014. Its best-known event is the Bridgewater Country Fair, a traditional agricultural fair that draws crowds from across the region each year and is among the last of the season — a fitting signature for a town that has held to its farming roots.
A place this rural has only a few roads, which concentrates its traffic. Route 133 is the main north-south route, running down across the Housatonic into Brookfield, and Route 67 carries traffic through as well. Those roads see the town’s steady through-travel — including the surge around fair time — and the citations that come with it.
