Bozrah is a small town in the southeastern corner of Connecticut, in New London County, with only a few thousand residents spread across farm country west of Norwich. Its origins lie inside Norwich itself: the land was part of that town’s original nine square miles, in the section called West Farms, and it became its own parish in 1737, going by names like New Concord and the Fourth Society of Norwich. When it was incorporated as a separate town in 1786, the residents had wanted to call it Bath, after the English spa. The name they got instead came from a quirk of history — the man who carried their petition to Hartford turned up in odd, parti-colored homespun, which reminded an amused legislator of a verse in Isaiah, and the Assembly named the town Bozrah.
For a small town, Bozrah is really a set of distinct villages — Fitchville, Gilman, and Leffingwell — each with its own identity. The Yantic River gave the town its early industry: cotton manufactories rose along the water in the Fitchville and Bozrahville sections, and buildings put up by the Fitch and Palmer Brothers concerns still stand and remain in use. That mill-and-village pattern, set against open farmland, is what gives Bozrah its character today, a rural town that quietly held onto its 19th-century bones.
Modern Bozrah is largely residential and agricultural, the kind of quiet New London County town that people drive through on the way to somewhere larger. Its position has always been about connection — close enough to Norwich to share in its history, but rural enough to keep its own pace.
That connective role shows up in its roads. Route 2 runs through Bozrah and ties it directly into Interstate 395, making the town a small but real junction for regional traffic, while Route 163 links it toward Norwich and Montville. Those corridors carry most of the through-traffic, and most of the citations along with it.
