Get to Know the Area

Bolton, Connecticut

Bolton sits in the hills of Tolland County, just east of Manchester, on ground that was once the eastern edge of Hartford. Before it had a name of its own it was known as the Hartford Mountains, or Hanover, and it was incorporated as Bolton in 1720. The town was larger then than it is now — its northern half was set off in 1808 to create Vernon. One early footnote gives a sense of its colonial standing: in 1723 the theologian Jonathan Edwards was installed as Bolton’s pastor, early in the career of one of New England’s most famous preachers.

The town’s economy was built on what came out of its ground. Bolton stone — a high-quality schist — was prized in the 1700s, and the quarries at Bolton Notch supported a small working community known as Quarryville. The stone traveled far: tombstone carvers across the region sourced their slabs here, and before the railroad, granite was hauled by oxcart down to the Connecticut River and shipped to cities along the East Coast. That trade tied a small inland town into a much wider economy.

Bolton’s defining natural feature is the Notch itself, a narrow pass of rock, caves, and woods that channels traffic through the eastern hills. It has been a thoroughfare for almost as long as Europeans have been in Connecticut — Thomas Hooker’s party is said to have come through here in 1636 on the way to found Hartford. Today the same gap carries highways, and Bolton Lakes give the town a recreational center to go with its rugged terrain.

That geography concentrates Bolton’s traffic at a single busy junction. I-384 reaches its eastern end at Bolton Notch, feeding into U.S. Route 6 and Route 44, while Route 85 begins nearby and runs south. The convergence of those roads makes the Notch one of the busier crossroads in the region — and a frequent source of citations. We keep track of these corridors and the enforcement along them, which is generally where the violations covered below begin.
