Bethlehem is a small, scenic town in the hills of Litchfield County, settled in 1734 and incorporated in 1787 under the older spelling “Bethlem.” For a town its size it has carried real weight in American religious and cultural history. The town has another quiet landmark in the Abbey of Regina Laudis, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1947, whose treasures include an exquisite 18th-century Neapolitan Crèche. Along with the Bellamy-Ferriday House and its gardens, the abbey gives Bethlehem a depth of history and a contemplative character unusual for so small a place. Together they make the town a destination for visitors well beyond the holidays.
Bethlehem’s road network is simple, which concentrates its traffic. Route 61 runs north and south as the town’s main spine, and Route 132 carries the main east-west traffic across it. Those two highways handle most of the through-travel — including the seasonal surge of Christmas Town visitors — and the citations that come with it.
