Berlin sits at the literal center of Connecticut — the state’s official geographic midpoint is here, in Hartford County — and for a town its size it holds an outsized place in American economic history. Around 1740, the Pattison brothers, who had emigrated from Ireland, opened the first tinware shop in the colonies. They peddled their wares house to house, first by basket and then, as the business grew, by mule and wagon, fanning out across the country. That practice gave the language a phrase that outlived the trade: the Yankee Peddler. Through the 1800s Berlin made far more than tin — wagons, clocks, hats, combs, blankets, tableware, even coffins — a remarkable concentration of small industry for one town.

The town is really three places in one. Berlin proper sits alongside its two long-established hamlets, Kensington and East Berlin, each with its own center and history. Kensington’s meetinghouse survives as the Kensington Congregational Church, and the Worthington section preserves the old academy and ridge that once drew students from neighboring states. Those distinct sections still shape how residents talk about where they live.

Berlin’s geography has always made it a crossroads. The Hartford–New Haven Path, laid out in 1687, became the basis for the Berlin Turnpike, the commercial strip that runs U.S. 5 and Route 15 together through town. In the 1950s the turnpike earned the nickname “Gasoline Alley,” and it still carries its mid-century mix of motels, neon, and roadside business. To the west, the Route 9 expressway cuts through the town on a north-south line, tying Berlin into the region’s highway network.

Those same roads are where most Berlin citations originate. The Berlin Turnpike is a heavily traveled commercial corridor with constant turning and merging traffic, and Route 9 moves fast-moving through traffic across town.
