Jay Ruane

Jay Ruane has spent his whole life as the outsider — and it shaped the lawyer he became. He grew up in Bridgeport, the kid everyone expected to succeed, riding the bus to a prep school where he never quite fit in. While his classmates traded stories about parties and after-school hangouts, Jay worked nights as a janitor, cleaning offices alone to save money for college. He didn’t have much in common with the people around him, but he learned early how to get along with just about anyone with a smile and a firm handshake.

That sense of being on the outside followed him through college and law school, where most of his peers were headed toward country-club careers drafting contracts and merger deals. That life wasn’t for him. Jay knew he wanted to help real people, so he commuted an hour each way to Hartford, suffered through the degree he came for, and took a job as a public defender making $26,000 a year — a fraction of what his classmates earned — because it let him be a lawyer who actually stood up for someone.

He understands what it feels like to need a lawyer: like something has gone wrong, like you’re on the outside looking in, wanting nothing more than for someone to see that you’re a good person with a lot to offer. Jay has been fighting that battle his entire life, and it’s exactly why he gets up every day to be a voice for clients who feel they don’t have one — making sure judges and prosecutors can’t treat them like a nobody.

As the founder and managing partner of Ruane Attorneys, Jay built Mr. Speeding Ticket on that same belief: that everyone deserves a champion in their corner. Despite all the lawyer jokes and everything you hear, he still believes in the justice system, and he’s never been afraid to take on the unpopular fight.
